Worship and Sacrifice

We were reading Genesis 22 this morning with the family and the Holy Spirit helped us see a connection between worship and sacrifice.  In verses 3-5, Abraham is taking his son and some servants to Moriah to obey God's voice in offering his only son, Isaac as an offering.  As they approach the the mountain where the sacrifice is going to take place, Abraham says to his servants, "Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you."  Besides showing incredible faith that God would indeed supply the needed sacrifice in place of Isaac, this shows a link between sacrifice and worship.

I believe Paul had this very passage in Genesis 22 in mind when he wrote in Romans 12:1b, "to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship."

Worship involves sacrifice.  In worship God is sanctifying us by uncovering idolatry in our hearts and putting to death our fleshly desires.  In worship we behold the glory of the Lord and He transforms us into the same image from one degree of glory to another. (2 Cor 3:18) What a sweet grace!
