In this season of life, Shana and I are seeking the Lord intentionally for direction and guidance. I was struck this morning in 1 Chronicles 14:8-17, how David (and many leaders in the bible) inquire of the Lord. After the Philistines had made a raid in the Valley of Rephaim, "David insquires of God, 'Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will you give them into my hand?'" The Lord told him to go up, he would deliver David and allow Israel to, "break through" their enemies. David names that place Baal-perazim, which means, Lord of breaking through.
The bible doesn't tell us if David's inquiring of God was a day, a week, or a month, but he wanted God to give him a specific answer for guidance, direction, and anointing. It also doesn't tell us how the petition was granted, but many times it came through a prophet. I'm reminded in Acts 13, church leaders were together and "while they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, 'Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.'"
Throughout the bible, we see God's people coming to him in expectant inquiry. Why should I not expect the Lord to lead me when I come to him for direction as well? It brings God glory when he clearly leads us in situations. Proverbs 3:6 says, "In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths." This is a great encouragement for us to pray, to inquire of the Lord and to expect him to lead, guide, and direct us. O Lord, give us a "break through" in prayer today.
