Serve unto the Lord

As Christians we need to be careful how we serve and give. If we try to minister in the flesh it will result in feeling that the people we're serving (the church, your family, etc.), even God, owe us something. Paul, in 2 Corinthians 8:5b, gives us an antidote against selfish service when describing the attitude of the Macedonia churches: "they gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us."

We must do our service or give of our resources unto the Lord. I know all too well how easy it is to serve for the praise of men. We must find our contentment in doing everything first and foremost as worship unto the Lord. We must pray for God to give us a servant's heart so that after we give of our time and treasure we can say, "We are unworthy servants, we have only done what was our duty." Luke 17:10.

  1. Thanks for this encouraging reminder. I find that unless I enter prayerfully into a serving situation, I will feel a great deal of selfish pride. I am so thankful for a gracious Father who forgives.
