Shepherding the Saints in Song - part 2

Colossians 3:16 says,

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns  and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

What does this verse teach us about the songs we sing when we gather for worship?

  1. Our songs should be biblical.
  2. Our songs teach and admonish.
  3. There are a variety of song types.
  4. The way we sing our songs (the condition of our hearts) is important.
God designed songs to have a didactic function.  When we combine truth about God with music, it engages our minds and affections in powerful ways.  In many non-literate cultures they can sing a song that may last for a few days that tells the history of their people.  Martin Luther, the great reformer, wrote volumes of commentaries, lectures, and articles.  Do you remember anything he wrote?  Can you quote anything?  How about A Mighty Fortress Is Our God.

The diet of songs we serve up for the church week in and week out begins to shape their view of God and how they respond to Him.

In proceeding posts, I would like to look at some biblical models for choosing songs in worship.
