'works' in Ephesians 2:8-10
I've never noticed before the interplay of 'works' in verses 8-10. Paul says in v 9 that God's gift of salvation is, "not a result of works" (ἔργων - ergon in the Greek). In v 10, Paul says that we are God's workmanship. In other words, God created us, bringing us into this world, and he re-created as his born-again children. Paul doesn't stop there - we are 're-created' in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. (v 10) We are not saved by our works (our sinful works could never produce salvation), but we are saved unto God's good works.
