Our family has been helped by Starr Meade's book, Training Hearts, Teaching Minds. It takes families through a systematic devotional using the Westminster Shorter Catechism. Question 25 asks, "How is Christ a Priest?" She summarizes this ways:
[The Old Testament] priests were sinners themselves; Jesus is sinless. Those priests offered animal sacrifices; Jesus offered His own blood. Those priests offered thousands of sacrifices, day after day; Jesus offered one sacrifice for all time. Those priests were only pictures of God's forgiveness and cleansing from sin; Jesus actually accomplished it. Those priests all died and had to be replaced; Jesus will never die and will continue as our priest forever.Hebrews 10:11-14 says, "And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified."
Praise God for Jesus - our eternal high priest!
