One of the books I'm reading for an Ethnomusicology class is Roberta King's, Music in the Life of the African Church. It does a great job in breaking down historically what happened when missionaries came to Africa. One notable quote:
Western Christians took the “bread of life” (the Christian faith) they had received over the centuries and put it in a plastic bag (their own customs). When they arrived in Africa, they fed people the bag along with the bread. “Now, the plastic bag is making us sick!” says Makhathini. “The plastic is theirs. We know that God planned for us to receive the bread just as he planned for them to receive it. We can remove the plastic, and enjoy the bread.” (76)
