Sabbath Rest

As a family, we've been studying the Ten Commandments for the last few weeks. The fourth commandment is, "You shall keep the Sabbath Day as holy." One precious reality that has re-emerged for us is that Jesus Christ is our sabbath rest. The commandment, like all of the law, points to Christ.

For us as Christians, united by faith in Christ, there is a resting from our rebellion against God, a resting from our dead works, a resting in the salvation that Christ has accomplished for us. Christ is our sabbath rest (Hebrews 3:16-4:11).

There's an old hymn that captures this reality, "Jesus, I Am Resting, Resting." The 3rd verse says,

Simply trusting Thee, Lord Jesus,

I behold Thee as Thou art;

And Thy love so pure, so changeless, satisfies my heart.

Satisfies its deepest longings,

Meets, supplies its every need,

Compasseth me round with blessings;

Thine is love indeed!

Here's a simple MP3 version I recorded. Let us rejoice that, "to the one who does not work but trusts him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness." (Romans 4:5)
