Ephesians 5:25-27 says, "Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such things, that she might be holy and without blemish."
Was the 'giving himself up' for the church only in Christ's death on the cross? Was it not also in him humbling himself by leaving the glories of heaven and coming to earth as a man? Was he not misunderstood, questioned, and mocked? Didn't he suffer emotionally and physically for his bride?
He also calls us to sanctify our wives. We do this by praying for and with them, leading them to Christ through his word, and by applying the gospel to our lives together.
Father God, help us as husbands to love our wives and give of ourselves...as Christ loved the church. Give us grace to sanctify our wives through prayer and the application of your gospel in our families.
